Subject: Linking WEAP to a Larger MODFLOW Model – Is It Possible? Posted: 3/26/2025 Viewed: 521 times
Dear WEAP community,
I have a question regarding the integration of WEAP with an existing MODFLOW model.
I have developed a WEAP model that focuses on a relatively small area consisting of two sub-basins. However, I also have access to a fully developed MODFLOW model that covers a larger region, including and extending beyond my area of interest.
Is it possible to link my WEAP model to this larger MODFLOW model, even though WEAP only covers a subset of the MODFLOW domain? If so, do I need to define all details (e.g., land use, demand sites, return flows, etc.) for the entire MODFLOW area in order for the linkage to function properly?
Additionally, I am concerned about potential groundwater interactions between the WEAP study area and the surrounding regions in the MODFLOW model. Since these interactions could be either positive or negative (e.g., inflows or outflows across boundaries), how should they be handled during the linking process to ensure realistic results? Would leaving areas outside the WEAP domain undefined in WEAP impact the groundwater simulation in the overlapping zones?
Any guidance or insights from others who have worked with a similar setup would be greatly appreciated.
Best regards.
