Subject: Adding Shapefile to existing WEAP Model

Hello,

I am having trouble adding a shapefile of CA rivers to an existing WEAP Model. I changed the coordinates as described in the User's Manual but the shapefile still does not appear.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

If you're using GIS:

To project your shapefile in GIS, select the project tool (ArcToolbox/Data Management Tools/Projections and Transformations/Project

Input Dataset or Feature Class: [Your shapefile]
Input Coordinate System [whatever you're using - should auto populate]
Output Dataset or Feature Class [I usually leave as the default because I've had trouble trying to save it where I want the first time. These instructions include how to do that, later]
Output Coordinate system: [open up the menu and go to Geographic Coordinate Systems/World/WGS1984]

It will take a little while for the tool to work.

When you see the new shapefile appear on your map, right click it and go to Data/Export Data.

In the window that appears, select "This layer's source data" and save it into your WEAP Area in My documents. So on my computer it's C:\Users\Stephanie\Documents\WEAP Areas\[name of my area]. While you've opened up the window to navigate to this location, make sure the "Save as type" says "shapefile."

Then go into WEAP and right click on the small section of the schematic where the shapefiles are listed, and select + Add Vector Layer (or + Add Raster Layer, whichever) and navigate to your shapefile.

Let me know if it works.

Thank you for the detailed instructions, Stephanie.

Unfortunately, it still did not work. Any additional suggestions?

Thank you for your help.

Are you using GIS?

Do you have other shapefiles already in your model?

Yes, I used GIS to project the shapefile to WGS1984.

Yes, there is other shapefiles in the model. Only one is visible which is the CA Hydrologic Regions. The coordinate system is undefined. This might be the problem?

Ah, the other shapefiles are most likely the problem. How could they be projected if they are undefined? Very confusing! It could be that they are a sub-category of WGS1984 (I have seen this before), because once you put in a sub-category, you can't use the non-subcategory version. It's like it changes the WEAP data frame, to make a GIS analogy. So, try to see if you can figure out what the other shapefiles are. I assume these are shapefiles you or a partner added in, not the default ones that came with WEAP, right?

The CA HR shapefile projection is undefined. This was added by one of us. The default WEAP country shape file has the WGS1984 projection but is not visible. Only the CA HR shapefile is visible in our WEAP model. I removed the projection for the shapefile I want to add (CA Rivers) but no luck. Any other suggestions?

Hi Devinder,

If the shapefile was showing on your screen, it had to have some sort of coordinate system. If you have built WEAP elements on top of that shapefile, they are now in that coordinate system, and that's why you can't project something different. I recommend trying to figure it out what your original shapefile's coordinate system was.

If you have that data layer still in GIS somewhere, you can try following the instructions here:

http://gis.stackexchange.com/questions/7839/identifying-coordinate-system-of-shapefile-when-unknown

Sounds good. I'm still trying to figure out the coordinate system of the shapefile.

WEAP does not know the coordinate system the model is in?

Unfortunately WEAP cannot tell you the name of the projection, you will have to find that in GIS, or perhaps your shapefile came with a .prj file that tells the name of the projection. You need the name if you're going to project your other shapefiles into the coordinate system so they can be displayed in your WEAP model. It sounds like you have to do that now because your WEAP elements have assumed that same coordinate system as your first shapefile and there's no way to change the projection of the WEAP elements once they are projected.

Hello Stephanie,

I was finally able to figure it out. I projected the new shapefiles to the same projection and it worked!

Thank you for all the help!

Happy Holidays!

Which projection was it? How did you figure it out?

I contacted the person who created the shapefile and they provided the original coordinate system. I tried following those instructions for the GIS forum but no luck. Luckily I was able to get hold of the person that created the shapefile.

Once again thank you for help!

Thank you for the all detailed information. I had the same problem, but I can solve after to save the .shp in the WEAP Areas Folder as you advice.
After to try many times I could solve the problem.
Have a nice day.
Greetings.

Unfortunately it's not working.
I'm trying to add a point shapefile, but after doing all steps I cannot see it in the schematic diagram.

Okay. It works now on an empty model. but it's not working on the existing model.
